As a designated J-1 Program Sponsor, UMMC is authorized to assign the following categories to J-1 exchange visitors:
- Professor – An exchange visitor who will primarily be involved in teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting at UMMC.
- Research scholar – An exchange visitor who will primarily be conducting research, observing, or consulting in connection with a research project at UMMC.
- Short-term scholar – An exchange visitor participating at UMMC on a short-term basis for the purpose of teaching, lecturing, conducting research, or consulting.
